If you trying to eat fewer carbs or you are on a low carb diet, these low carb dinner ideas for family can help. They are tasty and easy to prepare. But before diving into cooking, let’s learn about a low-carb diet and how it can benefit our family as a whole.

Without further ado, let’s find out.

What is a Low Carb Diet?

Low-carb diets are all about eating natural, whole food that is richer in protein and fat. They usually involve removing added sugar, bread, grains, potatoes, rice and pasta from your diet. Instead, you eat more meat, seafood, eggs, vegetables and fruit.

There are many different types of low-carb diets to choose from including the Atkins diet, Paleo diet and South Beach diet. All have their own pros and cons which means that you need to find the one which suits your lifestyle for the best results!

Benefits of a Low-Carb Diet

Low carb diets have been shown to cause several health benefits. A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that a low-carbohydrate approach is better than a low-fat approach and better than the standard American diet when it comes to controlling blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and weight.

Low carb diets can also help with sleep (nighttime leg cramps), headaches, irritability, anxiety levels, blood sugar control in diabetes mellitus type 2 as well as appetite control. And many people report an increase in energy levels!

Low carb Dinner Ideas for Family

If you want to start a low-carb diet, it’s best to start slowly. Eliminate one source of carbs at a time and replace them with protein and fat.

Take a high-protein breakfast for example, replace your morning bagel with an egg-white omelet or yogurt smoothie. Instead of rice for dinner, eat some seafood such as salmon with butter. Replace potatoes or pasta at lunch with a big green salad and lots of chicken (or other high-fat protein).

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Crabmeat
  • 1 Whisked Egg
  • 2 tsp mustard
  • 2 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 stalk Celery (finely diced)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire
  • ½ Shallot (finely diced)
  • 2 tbsp Parsley (finely diced)
  • 1 ½ tsp coconut flour
  • 4 tbsp Olive oil (extra virgin)
  • 2 tbsp Butter

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a sauté pan over medium to high heat. Sauté the celery for 3 minutes, then add the diced shallot and keep sautéing for 2 minutes more. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the egg, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Mix until a smooth paste is formed.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the Old Bay, parsley, coconut flour, and cool sauteed vegetables, mixing completely.
  4. Tenderly add the crab meat to the egg mixture, folding softly to combine. Try not to split up the crab lumps.
  5. Combine the dry ingredients to the crab mixture, again folding gently.
  6. Heat the remaining olive oil and butter over medium heat in the pan.
  7. Divide the crab mixture into even parts to form 4 cakes, squeeze firmly to form a thick cake. Put the cakes on a plate and cling wrap them. Put the plate in a refrigerator for about 2 hours. It will form best and wouldn’t break.
  8. Take the cakes out of the refrigerator. Heat the oil in a pan. Place the cakes carefully in the hot oil. Cook for about 3 minutes per side until golden brown. Cover your pan so they cook through completely. Lift an edge after three minutes. They should be browned and hold together well.
  9. Remove from the pan with a spatula and plate. Pour any remaining hot butter/oil sauce over the cakes when plated. Serve hot with remoulade sauce on top or on the side.
